Hellsing

Hellsing is a 2001 anime based on the manga series under the same name. This anime is about Seras Victoria, a police girl that somehow gets involved in a group of events related to vampires and the Hellsing organization.

In this review, I want to emphasize the aspects regarding the plot quality, animation, and characters.

This anime has gotten a seinen vampire-based plot with two main characters who make their way to get through different problems during the series. Hellsing may look simple at a first glance but when one gets into the plot, the plenty of things that the anime matches to it may make it confusing and easy to lose both the story and interest. Even though, the shortness of this project avoids a prevented loss of track, wrapping things up in the lasts episodes of the anime.

On the other hand, the animation of the anime gives it a mysterious aura that may remind of following projects such as Monster. The classic-looking design along with its soundtrack make a perfect combination for a seinen. Nevertheless, the animators use the darkness and shadows to spare time animating or hide imperfections, thus making the anime feel too forced into these characteristics. For example, there are scenes in which one can barely see what is happening like when there is a corpse on the floor and the only easily visible thing is a small amount of blood.

For instance, the animation is not the best one but it somehow works along with the plot. After all, most of the scenes take time in the late-night due to the impediment of vampires to show up below the sunlight.

Characters

Regarding the characters, there was not so much time to make a good development of each one yet their personalities are strongly marked.

Next some thoughts on some main characters (no relevant spoilers).

Seras Victoria

A cop who meets a shady man and somehow gets involved in vampire-related issues. She is the main character and at firsts may look kind of clumsy but she ends up being useful and highly important during the anime. Something important happens to her and she must make a choice that would change her life and personality. I personally liked her development, it was well put in though there were only 12 episodes.

Alucard

A tall, carefree vampire under the command of the Hellsing family. He meets Seras and changes her life in many aspects. The story of his relationship with the Hellsing family, especially with Integra, is well explained, simple and entertaining until some point.

Sir Integra Hellsing

Integra is the current head of the Hellsing family and the organization under the same name. She has got a master-servant as well as a friendly relationship with Alucard. She may look careless sometimes but not for naiveness but experience that makes her confident of what her organization and her do.

In conclusion, Hellsing is an anime I would confidently recommend to anyone who is into seinen or mystery animes. This anime was the first anime that I saw (knowing that was an anime) some years ago. You should give it a try and tell me if you liked it.
